University of Hamburg’s admission process for International students

The online portal International guide of the University of Hamburg allows a student to go through the application process and the first phase of your studies step-by-step. There are different application procedures and deadlines for different applicant groups for the programs in medicine, pharmacy and dentistry.

Before choosing a program for the bachelor's degree in Germany, a student requires complete knowledge about the available programs. To help the international students understand the academic programs better, the University of Hamburg and the Studienkolleg Hamburg offer a pre-semester preparatory program for the first-year international students. There’s also the Center for Academic Advising that offers proper academic advising on each of these undergraduate programs.

The University has a special selection process for the non-EU applicants though. The entry qualifications of international higher education are only comparable to a limited extent since there’s variation in the national “grading cultures”. To make it easier for the international students, University of Hamburg has taken into account the HZB grade (higher education entry qualification grade) that has been adapted to the German grading system as well as other criteria. The applicants do not necessarily have to fulfill all the criteria. However, those who do, stand a better chance at successful admission to the programs with admission restrictions.

The applications at the University of Hamburg as evaluated according to a bonus point system (PDF). For the HZB grade, that was mentioned earlier; an applicant receives a maximum of 30 points. To gain further bonus points, an applicant needs to meet the following criteria during the time of application.

  1. Ten bonus points for meeting one of the following criteria:
  • Assessment test at a state-accredited Studienkolleg in Germany or
  • successful participation in a preparatory course at Universität Hamburg or
  • Proof of outstanding German language skills

  1. Up to 10 bonus points if a student gets:
  • TestAS certificate (core test and subject-specific module)

  1. 4 bonus points for:
  • scholarship from a German institution to fund talented students and
  • other social criteria
