Anne MacGregor: A Canberra Local Who Made It Big

Anne MacGregor is a lawyer based out of Canberra, Australia who is currently practising law at an international law firm Dechert LLP. She went to Germany with a scholarship to pursue LLM from the University of Hamburg in 1991. It was the beginning of her career that spanned many cities across the world for over two decades. She has worked with two magic circle firms and the host of top tiers. She is one of the most respected antitrust and competition law expert based in Brussels.

According to her, the legal landscape in the European countries was very different when she first started looking for a work in the early 90s. She also exclaimed that she was at a disadvantage since she didn't have an EU citizenship, and she needed a work permit if anyone agreed to get her a job. Back in the 90s, the law firms were also into trade laws and a good number of international firms in Brussels had international teams there to practice EU law (primarily competition law).

Ms. MacGregor’s first job offer came from a firm who was looking for a native English speaker for their Brussels office, who could also communicate in German. The career Ms. MacGregor started with that job saw some incredible heights in the profession. A few years later, she was hired as a trade lawyer at a US law firm in Washington DC. She returned to Brussels after few years and joined Linklaters where she regularly dealt with the European commission, primarily with the Directorate General for Competition.

After a certain point, she decided to leave her job and try her hands on Journalism. She joined start-up news service in Brussels and took reporting duties while acting as the company's in-house counsel. In 2008, she moved back to private practice and continues to live in Brussels even today. For the young people who want to make their names in the field of law, Ms. MacGregor suggested to be very determined and to develop strong foreign language skills, especially for those who want to practice in Europe.
