All about United States

During the colonial era in America, the primary motive of literacy was to promote religious propaganda. When the revolutionary era established new republic leaders, the concern shifted towards building an educated citizenry. However, the focus of education was white male property-holders. Public education started expanding in the industrial era, and interestingly, it was a response to the change through which the society was going. During the time of mass European immigration (1880-1924), the education was channeled to either assimilate or Americanize the new groups that were coming to the American soil for livelihood. The history of higher study in the US started from the establishment of Harvard University (1636), and it is continuing. Harvard College was set up by the Massachusetts Bay colonial legislature to educate young men for the ministry. The next college that founded on American soil was the College of William and Mary. It was founded by the Virginia Government in 1693. Yale University was founded in 1701.

While applying for a program, an international student needs to provide the following documents to the University.

  • Mark sheets of class X, XII and bachelor’s degree (if it is done)
  • Transcripts from previously attended institutions
  • Statement of purpose
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Score reports of GMAT, GRE, IELTS or TOEFL (whichever is required for the particular course)
  • Documents confirming sufficient funds
  • Duly filled application form

The requirements may differ from one institute to another, which is why it is better to contact the administration of the respective institution and get the detailed information from the admission process and requirements, just to be on the safe side. There is also an application fee for every institution, so it is also important to know about that.

Since the expenses in the USA is little higher than countries like Canada, Australia and Malaysia, one needs to bring sufficient amount of fund to support not only his study but also his accommodation, food and other expenses. There's good news for the Indian students who are willing to pursue their higher studies from the reputed universities in the USA. A number of scholarships are available for the students who want to join study abroad programs. Some of these scholarships are sponsored by the government; some of them are funded by the Universities. Even some non-profit organizations also offer few valuable scholarships that can help a student fulfill his dream of studying at a US University
    • The Fulbright Nehru Master's Fellowship:
    • This scholarship is offered by the United States India Education Foundation which is awarded to 100 young and high achieving students who have secured a place in the master’s program at a US university.
    • ETS TOEFL Scholarship:
    • This scholarship covers graduate or undergraduate study, and it is offered to 15 Indian students who have shown excellence in the academic field and have taken part in extra-curricular activities, especially in community service.
    • Tata Scholarships for Cornell University:

This scholarship is funded by the Tata Education and Development Trust to Cornell University (an endowment worth $25 million) to offer financial support to the underprivileged yet meritorious Indian students who are willing to study undergraduate courses in Cornell University.

Apart from these three scholarships, there are other scholarships like American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship, Inlaks Scholarships to Study Abroad, Inlaks Research Travel Grants, and Lady Meherbai D. Tata Education Trust Scholarships.

Since a lot of students these days are showing interest to pursue their higher studies in the US, most of the Indian Banks have come up with various student loans that can help them pursue their dreams. Most of the banks offer a loan of 20 lakhs on an average with competitive interest rates which can be repaid over a limited period time. The government undertaken banks, as well as the private banks, offer lucrative loan offers that can help a student pursue his higher studies while managing other expenses like accommodation, travel allowance and food. Since every bank has their own set of terms and conditions, it is wiser to visit a bank and talk to the branch manager about the loan they are offering. That way one can have a clear understanding of the loan.Since a lot of students these days are showing interest to pursue their higher studies in the US, most of the Indian Banks have come up with various student loans that can help them pursue their dreams. Like most of the other countries, there are several options for a student's accommodation in the USA. Most of the educational institutes in the country help the students to find an accommodation while studying in the USA. A student gets to choose between two types of accommodations. One is on-campus that includes halls of residence or dormitories, and the other one is off campus which includes home stay or rented properties.
      • On-campus options:
      • This is an easier option for the students who are going to abroad for the first time. These halls of residence or dormitories give free access to all the necessities like food, laundry, and bathroom which make the lives of the students easier, and staying on-campus also allows an international student to mingle with local students and make new friends in a new place.
      • Rented properties:
      • A rented property is good for the students who like to live on their own and have enough funds to support the tuition fee as wellasotherexpenseslikefood, electricity, telephone and water. This option allows a student to grow as a self-reliant person while learning a thing or two about the American lifestyle. This accommodation can be little expensive, so one can share the apartment with friends to split the expenses among themselves.
      • Homestay:
      • Homestay means a student can live with an American family as a paying guest where he will be provided with a room as well as other facilities like laundry and bathrooms. This is a great way to learn about the American culture and to mingle with American people. At times the institutes help the students to find such accommodation within the proximity of the campus.

The student visa is USA is termed as F1 visa, and if you are willing to attend a University or college in the US you'll need these following things to get an F1 visa.
            • A valid passport
            • A duly filled application form
            • Proof of Nationality
            • Application payment receipt
            • Scores of GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, SAT (depending on the course applied)
            • Proof of sufficient funds
            • Passport size photographs of the candidate

One also needs to appear for an interview before his visa is approved. There the language skills of the candidate can be tested. The process can take up to months, so it is wiser to apply for a student visa three months prior to the commencement of the course.

The F1 visa doesn't allow a first-year student to accept an off-campus job. Under few particular circumstances, a student can get permission from the US Citizenship Immigration Services for off-campus employment, that too after one-year of study. The student's visa allows an international student to do an on-campus part-time job without any prior permission from USCIS. However, the students cannot work more than 20 hours a week, and during breaks and holidays they can work up to 40 hours a week. A student with an F1 visa can work for a commercial firm that offers services to the institution, like a cafeteria or a bookstore. Working off-campus with a student-visa can land an international student in some serious trouble which can lead to deportation.
